Hope is not a strategy.

Many talented athletes go unnoticed simply because they don't know when or how to engage with college programs. The recruiting window opens earlier than you think and staying proactive is the key to creating opportunities. Below is the blueprint.

The 4-Year Recruiting Timeline

What you should be doing every year of high school.

Y1
Freshman Year

Foundation & Discovery

Academics matter from day one. College coaches look at your core GPA starting freshman year. Athletically, focus on varsity experience, fundamental development and identifying what level of college sports you want to pursue.

Key Action Items:

  • Meet with guidance counselor to ensure NCAA core course compliance.
  • Research 10-15 schools (both athletic and academic fit).
  • Film everything. Start gathering raw footage for future highlight reels.
Y2
Sophomore Year

Profile Building & Exposure

It's time to get your name out there. Coaches may not be able to directly contact you yet (depending on sport-specific NCAA rules), but you can reach out to them and get on their radar.

Key Action Items:

  • Create an athletic resume/online profile.
  • Send intro emails to college coaches with your schedule and basic stats.
  • Attend regional camps or showcases to gauge your talent against peers.
Y3
Junior Year

Direct Contact & Evaluation

This is the most critical year for recruiting. Communication channels open up, coaches begin making serious evaluations and official offers begin to take shape. Your performance and outreach must be dialed in.

Key Action Items:

  • Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center.
  • Cut and send a 3-5 minute professional highlight tape.
  • Take the ACT/SAT and send scores to targeted schools.
  • Take unofficial college visits to get a feel for campuses.
Y4
Senior Year

Decisions & Execution

The final stretch. This year is about taking official visits, narrowing down your options, securing offers and signing your National Letter of Intent (NLI). Do not let senioritis affect your academics.

Key Action Items:

  • Schedule and take Official Visits (max 5 for D1).
  • Follow up consistently with coaches who have shown interest.
  • Apply to the universities you are being recruited by.
  • Make your final decision and sign the NLI.
